Three teams from the USA took home the top prize on Saturday 21st of July at the 2018 World Ultimate Club Championships in Cincinnati, USA. The venue for semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday of this premier club ultimate championships event was moved indoors, because of thunderstorms and tornado warnings.
San Francisco Revolver and Seattle Riot defended their 2014 championships and again took home the gold in the Men’s and Women’s divisions. Revolver defeated Sydney Colony 15-13 in a final that was too close to call until the very end. Riot handed Medellín Revolution its only loss of the tournament in a game that ended 15-8. In the Mixed division, Seattle BFG earned its first WUCC title, defeating Boston Slow White 15-11.
One of the core elements of ultimate is Spirit of the Game, a concept that incorporates fair play, sportsmanship, and self-refereeing on the field of play. In each division a team was honoured as the SotG winner as voted on by their opponents. In the Men’s division, the Long Donkeys from South Africa were named the Spirit winners. New Zealand’s ChCh Chicks won in the Women’s division and Belgium’s Flying Rabbits took home the Spirit prize in the Mixed division.
This time the quadrennial championship welcomed 2,971 athletes on 128 teams from 36 countries to the state of Ohio for eight days of competition. More than 100 games from WUCC are archived and available for viewing on WFDF’s youtube channels.
